Cumberland and North Westmorland Association

The society covered all churches in the Carlisle diocese, except Millom and those churches which were already affiliated to the Lancashire Association. Later changed its name to the Carlisle Diocesan Guild [Original research by Pat Halls, subsequently taken on by John Harrison.]

Carlisle Diocesan Guild

Formerly known as the Cumberland and North Westmorland Association of Change Ringers, it became known by its current name in 1975 and the first AGM was held at St. Bees on May 1st 1976. [Original research by Pat Halls, subsequently taken on by John Harrison.]

The Cumberland Association was founded with 17 affiliated towers in 1889 after the addition of further change ringing bell installations at towers in the area. The outbreak of World War II led to the demise of the former association. Following the war a new society, the Cumberland and North Westmorland Association was created in 1947, incorporating towers from a wider geographical spread as the new name suggests. In 1975 it again changed its name to reflect the dissolution of the old authoritarian counties alongside the desire to make the title more align to the local Diocese of Carlisle, which had been created in 1133 by Henry I out of part of the Diocese of Durham.
