19452007
Southwell and Nottingham Diocesan Guild

The name of the Southwell Diocese had been changed to the Southwell and Nottingham diocese in 2005. So the Southwell Diocesan Guild resolved to change its name to reflect the new name of the Diocese at its AGM in 2008. [Research by John Harrison.]

The AGM of the Midland Counties Association held on 7th April 1945 agreed the society should be divided into three separate societies – Derby, Leicester and Southwell – from 1 January 1946, to generate greater local interest and the advancement of ringing. For further background see the Ringing World (12th January 1996, pages 35 to 37) and entry for the Midlands Counties Guild. [Research and observations associated with the Council Library Certificates Collection by Chris Ridley.]

Note: Southwell Diocesan Guild of Change Ringers 1946 to 1958; thereafter known as Southwell Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers [Research and observations associated with the Council Library Badge Collection by Chris Ridley.]

This is a classic George Stacey badge produced some time between 1929 and 1944. It is 25mm in diameter, in 'white metal', and has a horseshoe fastening. The engraving on the obverse is 'NORTH NOTTS ASSOCIATION OF CHANGE RINGERS' and the reverse has the maker's mark - 'G' and 'S' in overlapping circles.
There is no record in the annual reports of the Association purchasing any membership badges, so this was probably ordered by an individual member.
