Initial name of the Durham & Newcastle Association of Church Bell Ringers. 24 November 1877 - Inaugural meeting of the Durham Association of Ringers, precursor to the Durham & Newcastle Association. Held at North Shields. Interestingly, the article in CB refers to it as Durham Association not Durham Diocesan Association. [Research by John Harrison.]

Durham and Newcastle Diocesan Association

Founded as the Durham Diocesan Association of Ringers. It adopted its current name after the formation of the Diocese of Newcastle in 1882. [Research by John Harrison.]

Formerly the Durham Diocesan Association which was founded on 25th August 1877 to preserve and develop the art of 'full circle' bell ringing across the parishes of Northumberland and Durham. It changed its name in 1882 following the creation of the Newcastle Diocesan out of the former larger Durham Diocesan. At the time it was the 5th of the territorial societies to be founded and only the 2nd based on a diocesan rather than county boundary.
