Sussex County Association

The idea of forming a county association had been raised at meetings in the 1880s as recorded in Bell News reports at the time. At a meeting held in the ringing chamber of St Pater, Brighton on 15th December 1884 the first item on the agenda was a proposition from the Revd Divie Robertson that the Sussex County Association of Change Ringers be formed. This was carried unanimously only after a lengthy discussion. It was further agreed the meeting should be adjourned after which a code of rules should be drawn up and circulated to every parish. A further meeting held on 24th January 1885 to allow delegates to report back to their respective local ringing societies. At this subsequent meeting the rules were agreed and officers elected, although a number of ringing activities in the later part of December 1884 appeared in Bell News under the society title. For further background see the Ringing World (25th January 1985, pages 72, 78 and 79) and the publication The Sussex County Association of Change Ringers 1885-2010 by David Kirkcaldy.
